Inspired by ShaderGlass for Windows. RetroVisor was built to finally give MacOS users a ShaderGlass like app which applies shader effects on top of desktop in a floating window. It feels as if a transparent CRT glass layer has been placed over your Mac’s display—complete with scanlines and subtle chromatic distortion.

In RetroVisor, you get an overlay window that covers your screen. It gives you the look of a classic CRT-monitor by simply using Apples screen recorder API and copying the recorded pixels underneath the window back into the GPU for shader effects. It is like looking through a floating pane of glass.

RetroVisor can directly save the shader-enhanced recording as a video file with sound. And additionally, you can also scale your display if you want to.

RetroVisor is free of ads, and also free of costs. It does not telephone home. And boy, have we had it notarized by Apple ! 😎

As of September 9, 2025, the first public beta of Version 1.0 is officially available!

Version 1.0 beta 2 is a huge update and a major leap forward from the last version. Until now, RetroVisor relied on the simple CRT Easy shader. With this release, the brand-new Sankara shader takes center stage as the new default, bringing a whole new level of authenticity to retro visuals.

The Sankara shader emulates a wide range of composite and CRT effects, including chroma smear, various scanline and dot mask options, as well as blooming effects for that classic glow.

In addition, Beta 2 also adds the ability to view the effect texture side-by-side with the original texture in a split view, making shader tuning and analysis more intuitive than ever. On top of that, zooming and panning have been improved, offering smoother navigation and a more flexible experience.
