I got my iPhone 5 yesterday and was on the fence about switching to Verizon. New iPhone 5 has usual crappy service at my house with no LTE even though it's in my city. Is it possible to return this iPhone 5, get a new iPhone 5 on verizon and port my number out in one transaction at the apple store? One complicating factor may be i sold my iPhone 4 already, but have an old 3G they could reattach to my number if needed till the port goes through.

if you don't have an upgrade through at&t you will be paying the ETF. And wherever you are going will have to have a Verizon iPhone in stock. Porting your number pretty much cancels the contract for good. So returning it for full credit then opening a new line on Verizon, activating it, then porting the number might work. You would have to call your local store.
