I'll try keeping this short and sweet. I just ordered a new rMBP. My 2009 13" MBP is going to my momma. I want to wipe the drive and give it to her like it's a brand new computer (will probably reinstall Microsoft Office for her). I am currently running Snow Leopard.

How do I give her the computer with a clean Mavericks install?

Can I go ahead and update it to Mavericks so I can tinker with it for a couple of weeks until my BTO gets in, then wipe it to factory fresh for her?

Thanks, this is my first time trying to offload a mac I've been using...

I follow the intructions on this article to do a clean install of Mavericks. You have to use CLI but it is complete step by step guide.

Hope this helps

Hmm so looks like I can do whatever I want with the machine and then when I'm ready to give to to her just install with a bootable USB.

Will all of the first-party apple apps install when I install Mavericks? iPhoto, iTunes, etc?

Yes, it'll be like you never touched it. All default apps will be there. You can also clean install over the internet using internet recovery tools if you don't have a Flash Drive laying around.
