I'm planning on returning my mac due to a hinge issue while still being within the 14 day return period. do i need to erase and restore my mac before ti take it to be returned or am i safe to just give it to them and they will erase all the content off the computer?

You better erase it, but just create another admin account and from there delete your account securely.
