I just purchased a set of 3rd Generation AirPods at the Local CotsCo store without realizing that these are "one size fits all." If I shake my head side to side fast enough I could toss them a few feet away from me. A good thing is that I can return them to CotsCo, no questions asked. I just don't understand how Apple allows for such a dumb design... other than to reduce production cost (?).

It’s called everyone’s ears are not the same size. Apple tries to make them fit for most people. Perhaps try AirPods Pro if you want a more traditional earbud with a seal. I know some of the Beats earbuds have a thing that goes around the ear for extra security, but I’ve never tried them.

I absolutely love my second generation AirPods, which are also one size fit all. I like them because before transparency mode was a thing you could hear what’s going around you while still wearing both AirPods. They happen to fit me pretty well. I don’t try to shake my head side to side, but during normal movement they don’t come out.

I want to try the third generation AirPods, but I will definitely buy from a store with a good return policy because they are shaped differently than the second generation. I suspect they will work for me, but I’m not 100% sure

Yes, I will return this set and buy the 2nd Generation Pro like the one my wife has, but will probably have to ordered from either Amazon, or the Apple Store. I purchased my wife's 2nd Generation AirPods at CostCo just before Christmas, and she figured that the small size seals fit her ears well, while the large ones fit my ears the best. She tried the new AirPods I purchased at Costco yesterday, and these two were not very secure in place. She didn't like the way they fit in the ears, and neither do I. When I went to Costco yesterday, I erroneously assumed that the the "AirPods cardboards" on the display were for the Generation 2 Pro :)

Costco has an excellent merchandize return policy.

The only thing I don’t like about the Pro is sometimes the seal bothers my ears. The sound is better but for a phone call or podcast I prefer the classic AirPods. Of course, if my ears were not compatible and they constantly fell out then I wouldn’t them either.

Apple has a 14 day return policy in the US I believe and I’m not sure about Amazon, but I believe it’s similar

I returned them at Costco yesterday (one day about purchase). No questions asked. I was told the a few other customers returned their, too.

I assume that the problem with the Pro version is that the ear tips do not allow for pressure equalization between one's ear canals and the outside. It can be painful sometimes, but i have only experienced when wearing noise-reduction rubberized ear plugs for extended periods of time at firing ranges or at work.

Try the AirPods 4th generations, at first they seem big. but if you twist them to face your mouth after putting them on, they fit better, plus they are offering Pro features for $179, or if you get the non ANC, they are on sale for $100

Do these include the rubberized seals or cups (whatever these are) like the ones in the Generation 2 Pro? Without these removable seals the AirPods don't fit securely in my ears.

The AirPods 4s don't but I have small ears and they work fine for me

While I could wear the Generation 3 and 4 AirPods, I returned the Generation 3 ones because these are a "fit all" design. But I can wear my wife's "Generation 2 Pro" AirPods using medium-size seals. In this case they won't fall off my ears during sudden movements. My wife can't wear the Gen. 3 and 4 AirPods for similar reasons. In her case the AirPods don't fit properly in one of her ears.
