Returning iPhone Pre-Order and Re-Buying it on Another Line

I pre-ordered the iPhone 3G S on my line from AT&T for the $400 price (to be shipped to my house). Today, I found out that my mom's line is eligible for an upgrade tomorrow for the $199 price. I called AT&T to see if once I get the phone to my house if I can go to the store and return it, only to buy the exact same phone on the other line for the cheaper price. They said that I should have no problem doing this, but should I trust them? Has anybody ever had a situation similar to this?
