Didn't they give you a Gift Card? the trade in value remains the same.
If you put the credit towards the iPhone, you will probably just get a Gift Card back for the difference.

Yes, I believe it's in the form of a gift card/store credit and not cash.

Whatever you paid with is what you'll get back. If it was a mix of cash and a gift card, you'll get cash and a gift card.
