WOuld someone please compare and contrast for me the rev A vs the rev B dual 2 ghz PM? I heard the A is better than the B. I need some brief comments as to why this would be the case.

better baseline graphics card, perhaps? top of the range always gets the better card while the mid-point gets the cr@p.

other than that I don't think there was any difference in the models, price excepted...

The previous 2.0 Ghz dual differs in the following ways that, IMO, makes it a "better" machine:

8 (eight) DIMM slots and the ability to address 8GB of RAM versus 4 on current model
PCI-X slots (100MHz/66MHz) versus 3 PCI slots on current model

You can sometimes find the "old" machines being cleared out at comparable "new" prices. They're in short supply. (I found one for $1799 on Friday)

You wouldn't get Tiger or the double-layer drive, though. If anyone has any better information, please leap in. :)

I'm not up on all the technical aspects. It has been often mentioned by members on this forum that It's not a good idea to purchase Rev. A of a Mac. So being that the new on is a Rev. B, means that problems have been corrected in this model. There is also the dual layer 16 x super drive.

I certainly don't agree with that assertion, owning a Rev A myself. :)

In fact, after having a Rev non-A eMac (died) and non-A iMac (DOA) I think it's a crap shoot either way.

My Rev A is the best Mac of them all. Rock solid and no complaints. :)

there are thee revisions of the dual 2GHz PM

rev.a

dual 2GHz ppc 970
8 ram slots
radeon 9600 pro standard, 9800 pro as an option.
4x superdrive (some latter models shipped with 9x drives)

rev.b
dual 2GHz ppc 970FX
8 ram slots
5200 ultra standard 9600XT, 9800XT 6800GT and 6800 ultra as options.
8x superdrive (some models shipped with 16 DL drives but locked with the firmware, this can be fixed)

rev.c
dual 2GHz ppc 970FX
4 ram slots 9600 standard, 9650, 6800GT and 6800 ultra as options.
16x superdrive

Rev B based on video card and CompUSA needing to clear out last month's "old" inventory. A Rev A would be pretty difficult to find these days. Rev C are shipping from Apple right now.
