Have MBPro purchased in Spring of 2009. Was running Snow Leopard (10.6.5) and "upgraded" to El Capitan (10.11). Performance is so poor, want to revert to Snow Leopard. Have copied pertinent files to portable drive. Have original div for Snow Leopard 10.6.3. Is reboot with that dvd, all that's needed? Will El Cap osx be deleted or overwritten completely?

Any help most appreciated; first time on MacRumors!

You'll need to erase El Capitan (which you can do while booted using the Snow Leopard install disk) or create another partition to install Snow Leopard onto. If you want to improve El Capitan performance instead, I recommend an SSD upgrade.

You are running new software on 6+ year old mac. Software can't overcome outdated hardware. Erasing and installing would help out performance as well as getting an SSD or more memory.

Snow Leopard and any browser that still runs on it is no longer secure. A better option may be to install something modern yet lean such as Linux Mint (http://www.linuxmint.com/index.php).
