I've looked through previous threads but couldn't find the solution to my problem. I have a 3G and I'm on Windows XP (I know this might be possible/easier if I were are on a Mac).

Had to do a restore yesterday and when I tried to go back to the last backup (11/13), there was an error. At that point, the only thing I can do was restore as new. I didn't lose any apps, but my contacts, texts, call history, and photos are all gone. Right now, all I care about is recovering the photos, anything else would be a bonus.

I read somewhere that (some?) .mddata files are actually jpg's in disguise, so if you changed the ext to .jpg, you can get some pictures back this way. Well I tried this for a few of the files in the backup folder, and it did work, but they only turned out to be the icons for my apps.

At this point, I'm guessing the pics were all wiped from the backup folder in the sync after the restore. So next, my boyfriend did a data recovery of our hard drive, and we did find a bunch of .mddata and .mdinfo files (among many other things, of course) that were deleted on 11/13 (previous sync) and 11/21 (latest sync).

But here's where we're stuck. We recovered some of these files and copied them back into the iTunes backup folder, but other than the apps, nothing else is different from the factory settings. Can anyone guide me on how to recover the lost photos? Are we looking for the wrong files? Perhaps even going about this completely wrong? Would really appreciate any and all advice.
