Hi all,
Just my quick impressions of the new HyperDrive USB-C Hub that plugs into your 61w MacBook USB-C brick.
I'm not even sure I "needed" this, just more general curiosity. And I guess I'm interested in the potential to stop dragging around an extra chargers in my work bag, as throughout the day I like to keep my personal + work iPhone, and AirPods + BeatsX topped off. Add benefit that it's a real 'hub' back to your MacBook Pro with the two USB-A ports. One less adapter, maybe?
One thing I was not expecting.. the hub is not very secured to the charger by just inserting the male USB end. In fact, it's rather loose, because you're relying on just the male USB-C end which can't really "clamp" to the brick. So, HyperDrive does provide a silicon sleeve that kinda helps keep them together. I don't like that the sleeve is white, as it looks like it might get dirty after repeated us. Basically any dark color would be better. The hub itself is well-matched in color and texture to the OEM charger.
I don't have a USB-C tester to measure voltage/current, but I think HyperDrive says your MacBook can get 56W while the hub is in use. Not sure if this is too big of a concern, but I might get a USB-C tester to just confirm (amount other things). They do make a version for the 87W MacBook charger, but as I think the bricks are different sizes, the hubs would not be interchangeable.
Overall, pretty interesting. I give it a grade of B. A full A+ would be for a different color sleeve or better way to semi-permanently attach the HyperDrive hub to your 61W brick.
