Yes there are stickers and skins and even real wood pieces with an adhesive backing that can totally transform your iPhone from bland to something totally different in seconds. If youre looking to actually replace your iPhones back glass panel with a piece of real wood material then the options get much smaller. The good people at Keyway Designs however have recently produced one of the finest iPhone 4 accessories I have come across to date. They offer an actual iPhone 4 replacement back with a piece of high quality wood attached to the back.
The packaging of each back is very nice indeed. They have used a very clever key grooved latching way of opening the box that is very unique. After removing the back you see two screwdrivers and two replacement screws if you happen to lose your originals. I found it very nice that they include two different head screwdrivers if you happen to have a normal Phillips head screw or a newer pentalobe screw with the newer iPhone 4S. The screwdrivers also have a nice magnetic tip which is nice when dealing with the tiny screws you have to unscrew.
Looking at the back side of each wood back you can see they are basically identical to your stock iPhone 4 back in every way. They feel of the Keyway back compared to the stock iPhone back is basically the same other than the weight difference being that one is wood and the other is glass.
We had the chance to test out the normal non customized version of the case and Keyway Designs was nice enough to make a custom back for us. The stock Black Palm Wood option we chose has an amazing finish to it unlike any other piece of wood I have had the chance to see in person. The quality of the wood is really out of this world and something you would expect to pay twice as much for. The Black Palm Wood back has a nice understated Keyway Designs logo in the bottom right corner that is embossed and blends in very well with the back.
Installing the back is very easy. Simply unscrew each screw at the bottom of your iPhone near your 30 pin connector and set aside. Then grip the back of your iPhone and push upwards with your thumbs until you feel the back move up and then just remove it. Grab your Keyway Wood back and just repeat the same process to do the install and reapply your screws and your good to go. Once everything is installed the look is truly nothing but class. The fact that this is an actual back replacement enhances the feel of everything 100 fold. Yes the other sticky wood backs are nice but I was always left feeling a little ho hum since it was just a sticker at the end of the day. With the Keyway Wood back its a whole other level of customization that nobody else can match.
The fit and finish of the back once installed is right on and matches perfectly. There are no gaps or flaws all the way around the iPhone. The only drawback I found after installing the back was that there is no flash diffuser for your camera which really isnt a huge deal but it would have been nice is if they could have included this to make it look and feel exactly like the stock back.
The Black Palm wood is really just an amazing finish I really have to reiterate. It has a very nice texture to it that is so nice to hold in the hand. Depending on the amount of light shining on the wood it tends to change its color a tad as well which is very cool. I would definitely recommend the Black Palm option if you had a black iPhone. They are a perfect match with the wood just blending in so well with the black front of the iPhone.
The custom back we had made for us is just jaw dropping. The main wood used is a very nice Walnut with the REVIEWS4i logo inlayed with Maple wood. I cannot believe the attention to detail that was put into the custom back with the amount of work it takes to produce a piece like this and to do it the right way. Every piece that is inlayed into the back is perfectly placed and cut with no ugly or uneven gaps anywhere to be seen. You can have any option you like if you choose to order a custom back from them and can only imagine what they will be able to produce if they are anything like the sample we received.
