Ultimate Ears today added to its speaker lineup with the launch of the UE Roll 2, a successor to the original UE Roll. The UE Roll 2 looks like the current version of the UE Roll, but it has been upgraded with a longer Bluetooth range and louder sound.

I own an original UE Roll, so Ultimate Ears sent me a UE Roll 2 for a comparison review ahead of the new speaker's rollout. When it comes to design, the palm-sized UE Roll 2 is physically identical to the original UE Roll. It features the same flat, circular design with a bungee cord in the back and a flap to cover both a microUSB port used for charging and a 3.5mm audio-in jack.

The UE Roll 2 isn't the most portable speaker out there due to its size (it's not going to go in a pocket), but because it's flat, it fits well in a purse or a backpack. It weighs about a half pound, so it's not going to add a lot of weight if you need to travel with it, and with the stretchy bungee cord, you can attach it just about anywhere.

Must get a few of these for the pews in the local church. They would fit in very nicely indeed. Useful for the hard of hearing to listen to their sermon I guess

That's the plus/minus volume controls. At first I was put off too, then I remembered that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

My big thing is... I wish that the reviewer had gotten a pair and played with the stereo function. I bought two of the original rolls a few weeks back, and while they sound great when the pairing actually works, it's a huge pain in the behind-- sometimes even impossible-- to get them set up and functioning properly in this mode. If a reviewer took notice of this, a) they'd eventually fix the problem and b) people like me would know to buy something else in the meantime for true stereo.

I do have a pair -- a UE Roll 2 and a UE Roll. I did test linking them up, but I didn't run into any problems so I didn't mention it in the review. I used the app directly and followed the instructions and they paired up properly. It took a few seconds for the pairing to register, but ultimately I didn't have any issues with that feature.

Not sure if that's because one of them is a UE Roll 2 or because I had a version of the app that was new to support the UE Roll 2. New app update is out now, so maybe that'll be a factor for you.

Just downloaded the new app. It _is_ a marked improvement, but am still having problems now and again. It's rare enough now, however, that I no longer have any significant complaints. Thank you!

Can you show a comparison picture with the model and sn info of both? I just purchased a "Roll 2" on ebay, and there is no identifiable information showing that I did receive a Roll 2 and not an original Roll. I would expect many others may be having this issue, and not even realizing they may have been duped.

Thank you!
