I'm impressed, but not surprised by the performance. Anyone who owns a recent iPad (Pro) knows that Apple can do great things with their processors. Especially in the video creation world - I'm curious to see the other workflows that are going to be tested. Dave2D had the best so far with comparing code compiling times.

All in all, I'm excited and debating if I should sell my iPad Pro or wait for a second generation.

I went for the M1 as replacement machine for my MBP 16 (last week the motherboard said PUFF, was repaired in 5 days) but I wonder who is replacing who here.

I’m rolling with Apple on this one. I jumped with a 13 then a 15 inch MBP when Apple switched to Intel as the performance was there. Now I would wait for the 16 M1 variant as I don’t think I need windows anymore due to better developer support compared to how it was in 2010.

Marketing is a hell of a thing. I had no idea Intel was stagnating this badly. Automatically for laptops I would hear only positive news about new core i7 chips for laptops including anytime Macs for refreshed.

My choice is easy, as my MBP is 7 years old. I was going to upgrade before the M1 announcement, now I'm definitely pulling the trigger. Getting MBP 512/16 to future-proof myself as much as possible without overdoing it on the SSD.

*I will consider buying a AS machine eventually; in a few years; when the boatload of plugins; DAW; softs; and drivers I use have all gone native.

M1 isn’t replacing my Mac Pro anytime soon for sustained workloads.

I’m getting a MBA though as a side device

I bought an Apple M1 Mac mini for my development machine (to develop iOS/macOS apps). I needed a dedicated machine for Apple Silicon Mac development. Apple M1 while it looks good won't replace my daily driver laptop since some apps do not work on it yet. Virtualization is a non-issue since I use dedicated machines running VMWare ESXi/VSphere to run Linux/Windows VMs.

Also, the Apple M1 doesn't support dual external displays on the portable Macs, which I need.

Got one today, and first impressions are very, very good.

Bye, bye Intel. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Intel still has its case for now. I posit an even stronger Intel in the future now they have real competition.

sadly as a developer, M1 isn’t ready for me yet

To be honest I was thinking that my purchase of a 16GB/512 Mac Mini was going to be less of a good buy after the keynote but seeing the performance and reactions so far I am so glad I did buy it. Apple has really undersold this one. Roll on Friday, You better not screw up UPS!

Easier said than done, TSMC doesn't have limitless production capacity. The logistics involved will complicate things for them.

I'm sure it's already part of their contingency plan. TSMC announced plans to build a fab in the US plus there's also Samsung fab. Waiting for INTC to hit bottom then load up right before they announce fabless. Put my $2 AMD investment to double work.
