As 2024 comes to an end, Apple Intelligence's memory maker provides a new tool to revisit your highlights, milestones, and cherished moments of the year.

The memory maker tool is a powerful new feature in iOS 18's revamped Photos app, found within the Memories collection. It allows users to create personalized "Memory Movies" from their photo libraries using simple written prompts.

By leveraging advanced machine learning, the memory maker identifies relevant photos and videos, arranges them into a cohesive narrative, and pairs them with curated music and animations. One standout aspect of the new memory maker is its ability to weave together moments with a beginning, middle, and end, creating a narrative that is designed to feel intentional and cinematic.

Like other Apple Intelligence features, the memory maker is only available on iPhones and iPads with the A17 Pro or M1 chip or newer. Likewise, you need to be running iOS 18.1 or iPadOS 18.1 or newer.

How to Use the Memory Maker

  1. Launch the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on the Memories tab to view auto-generated slideshows or start creating your own.
  2. Tap the Create button within Memories. You'll be prompted to enter a short text description of the memory you want to create, such as "My family trip to Greece," "Celebrating Mia's 18th birthday," or "Fun moments from summer 2024." Be as specific or general as you like—the more detailed your description, the more targeted the memory maker's selections will be.
  3. Wait while the Photos app creates your memory. Once completed, watch the video. You can also scroll through the images at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Tap the three dots at the top right of the screen to edit the movie's timeline or title, or loop it. If you're an Apple Music subscriber, you can choose a different soundtrack to accompany your movie by tapping the music icon.
  5. When you're happy with the Memory Movie, you can tap the three dots to share, export, AirPlay, or delete it, and well as add it to Favorite Memories.

As the new year approaches, the memory maker is the perfect new tool to try out to relive your 2024 highlights. What do you think of the feature? Let us know in the comments.

Waiting for iOS 19 to compile and summarize across photo, video, streamed content, payment card transactions, loyalty “rewards” programs, web trackers, and Health logs for a comprehensive year-end wrapped experience… like an endoscopy without anesthesia

Hey Siri, help me completely forget 2024 because it’s been complete crap just like each year before it back to about 2012 (personally speaking of course).

Yeah…but what prompt does one use to actually get a “year in review”? I'm only getting a few pictures from a few events.

I just tried this. It was pretty bad. Lots of repetitive photos from the same event. Throwaway shots with no people in them. Cheesy music. Maybe this would be better if I had kids of more friends.

It failed pretty bad the first attempt with "2024 year in review with family, friends and trips". This then let me define "family" and then "friends". It came back with like 5 photos and wasn't great.

Getting more generic with "2024 trips" worked a lot better. It came back with dozens of photos and a few videos set to some Green Day. My only complaint would be that the events were out of order and kinda mixed together, but its still a passable video with very little effort.

I tried this with some different prompts. It's weird: I can't get more than like 20 photos and 2-3 clips from videos. I did it with one of my kids ("summarize their life 20xx-2024") and various other prompts, same results.

I was stoked about the AI in Photos, but so far I've been underwhelmed. That's okay, it's probably better for me (for my memory and psychological health) to handle this task on my own. It has become a kind of soothing hobby anyway, to curate our family photo albums. (My wife and I use Shared Library.)

My iPhone 13 Pro is too dumb for this, so I’ll have to just use the…exact same feature…that has been here for years? Am I missing something? Photos has been making movies for me ever since they copied the feature from Google Photos years ago.

Are these different because now they are made with “AI”?

Apple Intelligence memory creation is a nice feature. I had used it to create a memory of my recent trip. Does the job quite well. Nice to have the ability to create custom memories.

Why didn't they put this on Macs yet? I don't have an iPhone 16 but would like to try it. I guess we're still waiting for some reason, or our desktops aren't powerful enough 😒

In 2024 I took around 2,800 pictures and 27 of them are marked as Favourites. I prompted for a memory of Favourite Photos of 2024 and I got a mix of random pics, videos and looped Live shots. None were from my favourites. I tried again this time replacing Favourite with Loved and got the Creation Unavailable message.

I mean there should be no intelligence associated with this - Favourite / Loved is a binary yes or no choice. Waste of time.

It says "no internet connection" when I try even though I definitely have a cellular connection, how else would I be reading the article or replying here. Just another example of the pathetic buggy trash that is apple intelligence

Tried this several times to get a video highlighting one of the People in my list. It swirled around a hazy graphic image that never stopped and I got nothing.
