Donnie Darko
Southland Tales
The Box

None of these films are perfect, especially Southland Tales, but this director is one of the most intriguing we've had since David Lynch. He takes chances, experiments, and makes us think as well as feel. Most importantly, he takes us to a different world- his, and makes us want to stay. I haven't completely figured him out yet, and that's why I like his work.

Kelly is an original to be sure. His films so far are what I would call beautiful messes. But when he gets it figured out, he's going to be one of our best ever.

Here's to another future great surrealist.

Please don't skewer me, I'm not a film buff by any stretch.

Where would you rate Terry Gilliam's work against Richard Kelly's? I've always enjoyed the "messes" that Gilliam has made, and his view on the world.

Love Terry Gilliam. He's made some great stuff and bad stuff. Baron Munchausen was amazing. Brazil was OK, as was Dr Parnassus. Gilliam and Kelly would fall into the same category for me.

glad to hear I wanted to see the box but wasnt quite sure if it was a rental first or not but ill add it to netflix when i can.

Time Bandits is the first one of his movies that I saw, and I just enjoyed myself thoroughly. Munchausen was wonderful. When I watched the extras for that one, and heard of ALL of the crap he went through to make that movie happen at all, it's incredible.

Which of the Kelly movies you listed would be the best one for me to start with then?

Thanks!

It's freaky. You won't know what's going on until the end, but you will be able to figure it out. It's not that mysterious.

The other thing I like about him is his ability to get great performances from people who usually aren't that great. Diaz and Marsden are incredible in The Box.

Duane Johnson (the Rock) is amazing in Southland Tales, even though the film is not so good. That is the mark of a good director to me.

Start with Donnie Darko. Then do The Box. If you like both, do Southland Tales. Southland Tales is rough going though. It's extremely bizarre.
