I was informed by friends in Kenya that Richard Leakey had passed away 2 January. He was a force to be reckoned with.

More than a force to be reckoned with; an utterly extraordinary - and amazing - and nothing less than a completely impressive human being.
I should mention that I attended a talk (an amazing talk) given by him at my university when I had graduated and just started my own postgrad studies, and had just started teaching there....this is embarrassing, a reminder of "tempus fugit", all of what is now perilously close to forty years ago.
Oh, dear.
He was a devastatingly articulate, informed, compelling - and - yes - attractive speaker.
