That's wierd, why doesn't Chicago allow spray painting outside? Wouls people call the cops on you if they saw you doing that?

Well I know in south Chicago they don't allow the sale and purchase of it, to help stop graffiti, I suppose. I don't know if it's illegal to spray outside if you have a can, but I can't find anywhere that'll let me. I live in a big apartment complex, so I have no yard, and can't really store a spray painted piece of wood in my apartment (smell and fumes).

Let me be more specific as to what I'm looking to paint.

Well, a while back I posted this photo, and said that I was working on an iMac-type case for my Powerbook. Well, I finally got the wood cut and patched up, some primer on, so I am looking for a place in Chicago to finish painting it now.

Here's the front:

Here's how it's gonna lay on the inside:

There'll be two speakers there, the case will come off of the Powerbook, and the hub will be used to attach the BT dongle, the USB fans (for coolin'), and the USB keyboard.

Hole on side for power button, and top DVD slot:

Those do look better in person than in the pictures.

Yay!

i wish i had my own place and i'd help you out, but i'll be gone until wed after work and can't arrange anything now, if you haven't had any luck by next friday send me a PM or something and i'll see what i can do.

even though it's my parents place i'm sure they wouldn't mind if you came over and spray painted in the garage, we've done it a few times ourselves. so i don't think it'd be a big deal, i'll be gone all weekend and during the majority of next week though so hopefull someone else can help you out sooner.

Thanks for the offer, if no one else responds, I'll take you up on it. I'm not in a huge hurry to get this done, so it can wait a week or two, but sooner is always better!

What an innovative idea...

I would love for you to come over and have a spray, but as you can see from my sig it may be a little far...

God luck with your project and please post once complete.

Hey guys, this is kind of a weird request, so bear with me. I live in south Chicago, where it is illegal to purchase spray paint (unless it's Rustoleum, oddly enough), and I've been told I can't spray in public anywhere around where I live. So. I'm working on a wood project I want to spray paint, and I was wondering if anyone had a yard or garage up north that I could paint this in, and maybe store for a few days to let it dry and do touch ups? I wouldn't be there long, and it's fairly small (1.5' long and wide).

I normally wouldn't ask this, but since it's summer all my friends from the north are out of town too, so... help a MR member out! Oh, and yes, this project IS actually Mac-related, too!

Hate to break it to you- but you can't buy or use spray paint on the north side either. There are paint stores up here- but they have all the spray paint locked up. You have to be a pro to buy it.

Well, I have the paint I need, I bought it when I started this project up in the saner city of Minneapolis. All I need is a place to paint.

if i still lived in the north side of chicago, i would have said yes. maybe you could just get a storage unit and work on it there?

LOL.

Give me a break! Makes sense since it so easy to get around the city by bus or train.

That's crazy! It makes sense, but still... Anyway, cool project.

I'm pretty sure there are laws on spray paint in new york city...you might not be able to buy it under the age of 18 or 21. If I recall...

Well, it was all part of Mayor Daley's graffiti fighting initiative. Has it stopped graffiti? Nope. Just like not allowing guns hasn't stopped gun crime. Prohibition doesn't work. It just makes things harder for law-abiding folk.

I will say that on my visit lasy October, I found Chicago "cleaner" from "graffiti" than what I saw in Iceland.

Awesome idea. :)

You need a little silver apple on the front though.

I've got the stencil ready to go! And the paint! Gotta pass over all the patched up wood with more white, though, then the grey, then the gloss!

Well chip, they can't seem to keep it off my beloved Uptown Theater, which we're still as a community trying to renovate. As soon as it's cleaned off, it gets tagged again. And it's never been a huge problem in Chicago anyway.

All I can say is that on my last visit, I was impressed with the "values" of the city as a whole.

Very true. As I've said before, this is the only American city I'll ever live in. I've traveled all around the US and this place is as good as it gets- for me anyway. It's very balanced. My next stop is Canada at some point. Most likely Montreal or Quebec City for retirement.

I understand, since I was/am willing to move ti your fair city. :)

How I wish i could make my way to the likes of Iceland, or even London at my ripe old age of 48. :D

At this point in my life, any place other than the US would be better IMO.

I also needed to spray a small part and live in an apartment. My solution was to use a large box to contain things and I opened every window before hand.

Wow, I thought about that, but I have a feeling that I'd just end up stinking up my apartment and the neighbors - and then they'd kill me.

Here's one last photo, kind of as a bump for this thread, too:
