Hello,

On April 28th 2020 I purchased an 2019 iMac with 5 stars review on BestBuy for over $1400 with tax. It was an Apple - 21.5" iMac® with Retina 4K display - Intel Core i5 (3.0GHz) - 8GB Memory - 1TB Fusion Drive - Silver. I am not a pro in computers I brought the latest and one of the best. Now, after using it for a couple of months, it became extremely slow when I use iMovie alone or Adobe Programs Alone or even Xcode Alone. I always get messages that say low memory. I have contacted Apple Support a couple of times. The first time I chatted, I was told that they do not add memory and I have to contact a third party place so I could add more memory. They were very friendly and the gentlemen in the third party place told me that even with 32 GB of Memory it will still be slow because this iMac has two hard drives. One of them is new but very small and the other is big but uses the technology of a 50 year old hard drive. And the best option for me was to change the hard drive to a Samsung hard drive (which has amazing reviews on Amazon) and also to upgrade the memory. This whole thing will cost me over $800. And if I didn't have the money, changing the hard drive would be a better option than to change the memory. My question to you is if it is better to upgrade this iMac for $1,000 or trade it in for about $500 to get the MacBook Pro with M1 or mac Mini with the M1 chip.

All I want is something powerful enough so I could use with Adobe and something that is smooth and won't freeze. My budget is $500 - $1000. Should I trade in my current mac or should I upgrade memory and hard drive. And if I upgrade, which product will be the best choice?

I thank you in advance and I hope I find an answer.

Regards,

If the Mac only has 8GB of RAM, you definitely need more for what you are doing, not to mention if you have a lot of programs loaded, they may not all be able to fit on the SSD part of the Fusion drive.

If I were in your tech shoes, I would sell that Mac and get one of the M1 Macs. I think you would be much happier.
