Maybe I am an idiot, but I assumed the ringer would not go off if the headphones were in. The sound plays in the headphones, so why would it feel the need to play through the external speaker as well?

I was in the library yesterday, studying and listening to some music when the phone started ringing. I didn't immediately shut it off, but I didn't think much of it. About a minute later, the person called back, so the phone started ringing again. I didn't think much of it, because I was hearing it through the headphones. I look around though and the other students studying around me were glaring at me. Apparently the ringer played through the speaker at its standard, loud volume as well as through the headphones.

This pisses me off. I like leaving the ringer on when listening to music, because then I know when I get a message or email. I never feel the vibrate, so that's useless. But if I can't use it in the library this way, then that's a problem.

Update - My wife just made fun of me because she said it still rings with headphones in, when on silent. I did some testing and here's what I found:

With headphones in, on silent mode
-SMS, Email, etc do not make tones through headphones
-Phone does ring through headphones, but not out loud

With headphones in, not on silent
-SMS, Email, etc make tones through headphones, not through speaker
-Phone rings through both headphones and out loud through speaker.
