Newbie question. Do we need to purchase our songs from iTunes in order to turn them into ringtones? I have CDs which I imported, lets take my Cut Chemist CD for example. Even though I already own the music do I need to buy it again on iTunes to turn it into a ringtone?

No, search this forum for the ringtones in 7.4.1 update or whatever itunes version you have, if you have itunes 3.x download version 7.4 because it makes free ringtones really easy

iTunes 7.4.1:

1. Rename *.m4a to *.m4r
2. Add to iTunes
3. Go to ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones/
4. Rename to *.m4a
5. Sync iPhone

You can use Audacity or something like it to cut the part of the song you want out.
