I'm trying to rip a certain section of the "special features" disc that came with the original movie. The original movie is on the first DVD, and the second disc is all the bonus material. I tried ripping the special features disc in Handbrake, and I only got part of the bonus material, and not the material in particular I wanted. I've looked through all the source titles, and they only show part of the features. How do I get to the features I want using Handbrake? Thanks for the help!

Maybe try ripping the DVD with a ripping software title like MacTheRipper, RipIt or FairMount first, and then use Handbrake to encode the ripped DVD.

Btw, Handbrake does need VLC Player to circumvent the copy protection scheme used with commercial DVDs, something ripping titles like the one I mentioned do for themselves, as Handbrake is only used for encoding not the actual ripping process.

Or maybe the DVD uses a copy-protection scheme too advanced for the VLC library used by Handbrake, thus a ripping software is needed.

rip - copying the content of the video DVD to the HDD and circumventing the copy-protection scheme

encode - a better word is transcode, as the software used for this transcodes the format and codec used in the original to another format and codec for the finished file

Perhaps looking in the VIDEO_TS folder will help you. Often separate clips are written to the disc as separate files.

I recently did this by opening up the DVD in DVD Player, and while it was playing, right clicked on the screen and chose different "Titles" to play. Keep clicking on different ones until you find the title of the special feature you want to rip.

Once you find it, open Handbrake and choose the Title from there to rip. Takes some time if there are a lot of small clips of special features (therefore meaning a lot of Titles), but worth it if you really want that Gag Reel that came with the Netflix ordered copy of Whose Line Is It Anyway :)
