Ripping a DVD

I'd like to get some DVD's onto my iPod Touch (When I get it). How would I be able to convert the DVD into a format the iPod Touch could recognize? Is it legal?

Handbrake at http://handbrake.m0k.org/. It is legal for you to make a copy of your legally bought DVD, but it is not legal to break any encryption or copy protection. I believe that is the way the digital rights laws work.
