Ripping Region 1 DVDs on a UK Late 2008 Macbook?

Hi guys, i am having a lot of trouble trying to Rip Bubba Ho-Tep from a region 1 dvd to my iPhone/Touch.

Handbrake won't work, just hangs.
I have iRipit too and even on the latest version it says "Your Drive won't grant Permission To Read"

Just tried Career Opportunities and that is the same.

Have you played the DVD on your Mac? This should change the region code which may solve your problem. However the code can only be changed 5 times:

Still struggling with this....
Trying Fairmount now.

I got MacX DVDRipper Pro when it was free but even this is no use with region 1 discs on a region 2 macbook. even though the website says it should bypass region locking.

EDIT:

I have now Ripped said dvd on my wifes Win7 laptop. No Problems.
Very annoying.
My next try i will whip out an old external dvd writer and see if this has the region locked issues.
