Risk(s) of updating iTunes

Hi,

I have iTunes 12.0.1.26 in my 13" MBP from early 2011.

iTunes has popped up and has asked me (again and again)
for a long time, (months), if I want to update to iTunes 12.8.1

I wonder if there is a disadvantage or an effect of
updating iTunes so much. I, for example, tried to
update this computer model to Mojave and I had to
learn (after asking in this forum) that Mojave was not
fit anymore for this particular 13" MBP. (I still have
Yosimite). However, the computer, just like iTunes
now, did not stop telling me to upgrade!

Should I upgrade?? If so, to what version of iTunes??
I had to later find out - the hard way - that Mojave was
not good for the 13" MBP and while I was doing the
Mojave update an iPhone 5c was messed up because it
was connected to the computer. How much should I
update to iTunes?? That iPhone 5c will still not
accept its current password. It rejects it!

Mojave is fine for a 2011, not sure why that was said. Keep iTunes up to date via the Mac App Store.
