I have the base rMB 2015. Came from MBP 15, 2012 and rMB did feel more laggy but portability was worth it. I guess the keyboard is ok even though i do make writing errors. I use the LG UltraFine 4k Monitor with the rMB and even though it works, it gets a bit laggy with 4 different writing programs opened up at same time.

Does your 2017 work smooth with the 4k screen? Wondering if I should upgrade and what would be best configuration. I also do some 4k FCPX edits on this MacBook. It works fine but not as great when running on the 4k screen. I guess I'm really pushing it.

Wondering if the 2017 model would solve these issues.

I can only comment on the base 2017 rMB, gets a bit laggy when 4k set looks like 2560x1440 and rMB not in clam shell, that being said when unit in clam shell gfx are much better. At "Best for Retina" and in clam shell base unit seems really good. Understand the i7 will give the best performance for gfx as the GPU has the highest clock.

If you don't need this years model since you have 2016, next version might be worth waiting for with Coffeelake and DDR4 as there should an improvement in GPU.

So how do you power the mb and drive a monitor at once? a dock of some kind?

Have two of these, used with 2015, 2016, and 207 MB, never any apparent lag, retina resolution, USB hub with power (saving over $100 for a separate hub).

do you notice a difference between the 2015 and 2017 plugged into the monitor? what about using final cut while plugged into the monitor? 2015 runs at 48hz on the LG 4k ultra fine according to apple. 2016 and 2017 run at 60hz

Not really doing video editing, and really wouldn't expect full features from this MB over the MBP. For day-to-day use, I've never seen any significant lag using a 4K monitor, YMMVH. According to Apple's website, "With macOS Sierra, MacBook (2015 and later) supports 4K (3840x2160) displays at 60Hz operation over DisplayPort."

The LG UF 4K is 4096x2304, I believe that's why you need '16 or newer MB for 60Hz.

The '15s will indeed drive 3840x2160 at 60Hz, which most "4K" monitors are.
