I've been reading about the 15" rMBP display issues lately (i.e. IR) and have a few questions.

I am hoping to purchase a new 15" rMBP from the apple store this weekend, and based off of what I have been reading I should hope to get one with the Samsung display.

So, is there any way to tell if it has a Samsung display before making the purchase? For example, based off serial number on the box, or some other identifying mark?

If not, how do I tell what kind of display it has once I have purchased it?

If I get one that is an LG, if I want to trade it in for a Samsung, can I simply take it back and ask for an exchange and hope that it has a Samsung display, or does there actually have to be a problem with it for them to make an exchange?

Really can't wait to get this laptop... sounds like an amazing piece of technology.

there's no way you can find out if it's a samsung or an LG display before the purchase, it's a russian roulette.

Actually i have a rMBP early 2013 with LG screen (Revision 2), no IR at all after 2 months.

I believe you can trade your first macbook pro for the (14 days Return) if you're not satisfied with your screen, but if the 14 days return is over you can trade your screen only if affected by some kind of issue

new models might be announced in less than one month. Just thought you might want to know that.

As far as the IR problem, I don't know what to say. Just buy the machine and hope that you don't have any problems. If IR appears within the first year, Apple will replace your screen.

Ah, there is hope for the LG screen.

Thanks for the info.

I'm aware that new models might be announced soon, although in my particular situation I kind of need a new laptop as soon as I can.

Also, I'm assuming that if I purchase AppleCare (which I plan to), if IR were to develop within 3 years Apple would replace the display?

Yes, they would as long as it fails the checkerboard test: leave a checkerboard on the screen of a rMBP for around 10 min and then change the screen. If you can see the checkerboard you get a new screen. If not, then it's up to the Genius.

Interesting... Thanks!

Love these forums. Everyone replies so quickly. Don't know what I would do without you guys.:)

I told 3 apple specialists in Portland (at Pioneer Square) that I didn't want an lg screen - the third was aware of something the other 2 were not... They have a method of determining whether or not you'll get an lg screen without opening it up but aren't supposed to tell us (maybe based on its serial #)... Went in the back and produced me my macbook - bought it, checked it out in store with terminal.. Looked it over for dead pixels, color uniformity etc... And them went on my merry way. He said they'd rather give me the one I want than have me return a half a dozen....

A MacMall sales guy claimed to me all their stock since march 2013 are Samsungs only and that could return the machine no questions asked if it was not a Samsung. I did not ended buying from them so cannot confirm this, perhaps other people here can indicate if MacMall have supply them with Samsung equipped rMBP's.

That last part...That just makes Waaay too much sense. Who would have thought salesmen in TrailBlazer country would be so wise. :D

Just a rib coming from Lakerland:)

LG has better colors. Samsung is more reliable and has better brightness, although version 2 from LG is good enough, so I would ay they are equal.
