I'm just wondering, since it seems very hard to replace the rMBP battery with even iFixit finding it a pain, is there some trick Apple have to do it?

As I understand it, Apple replaces the battery by replacing the portion of the chassis to which the battery is glued. $200, IIRC

i thought they give you a refurbished machine with a working battery

or that might just be idevices

No, they don't give you a refurbished Mac. They don't exchange your $2000 Mac for another, just to replace the $200 battery.
