Using a rMBP I plugged in a 1080p HDTV via HDMI.

In display prefs I set output to best for the HDTV 1080P mirroring.

Then I wanted to play a 1080p video and close the rMBP lid but it goes to sleep?

Thanks will try.

Without the no sleep app,
Is there a way to toggle the internal display off when connected to another display?

Not just the brightness turned down but actually only use the external display so no resources are wasted mirroring?

Set a hot corner to put the display to sleep, then just move the pointer to that corner and the display will go to sleep instantly.

I also use the NoSleep app to keep my stuff awake with the lid closed.

Great suggestions. Thanks everyone.

Another option is Insomniax. I had this app for a while, and it works great!

I used to use InsomniaX before NoSleep, lack of updates and incompatibilities with newer versions of OS X made me switch. The dev's site hasn't been updated in 7 years and even though a newer version was supposedly released earlier this year it still sounds like it doesn't work right, based on reviews anyway.
