Firstly, apologies if this has been discussed previously (I did a search but nothing came up).

I guess maybe it was mentioned around the time that the 15" rMBP was released, but is there an official reason why it doesn't say "MacBook Pro" on the black rim/bezel beneath the screen? I thought it looked quite good on the standard models!

I think it's due to a change in the manufacturing process - the glass isn't stuck on like it used to be.

That sounds about right!

However, the cynical part of me believes that's Apple's subtle way of indicating how non-upgradable the retinas are...

So that they can be used in movies and TV shows without having to cover it up.

Personally, I don't believe there was any practical reason for its disappearance. I think it's akin to opening up a bar without a sign on the outside :p
it's just..."coooool"

I prefer it without the branding actually. It looks quite neat. The reason being is because there is no glass on the display and therefore, apple cannot etch the "MacBook Pro" branding on.

My guess it's so that they can merge the product lines soon, given that the Airs and Pros are becoming quite similar.

The "pro" means very little these days. The line is effectively all becoming the same. The iconic colour and shape is what people use to identify it.

Aha, thanks for these replies and the links to other threads. I had suspected that it would be a manufacturing reason rather than an aesthetic one.
