I have a 15" rMBP that is plugged into a 24" Samsung monitor via HDMI. I have the laptop screen set to 1680x1050.
I tend to use the external monitor for games and keep other applications such as Safari on the laptop screen.
Quite often the laptop will be unplugged from the display and then I will take it with me and use it at another location without an external monitor.
However quite often when i come back and I plug the HDMI cable back in (With the laptop on) it will revert back to being 'best for retina' and I have to change it.
Any reason why this would happen? I also have to uplug the HDMI cable from the laptop before i shut the lid to sleep, otherwise it will operate clamshell mode, where I want it to sleep..
Other than that the device operates fine, however I do sometimes get the odd moment, where the external monitor will go black for about 5 seconds and then come back on again. Not had a chance to try another monitor but don't know if there is a connection.
