Retina display doesn’t sit behind a layer of glass, it is the glass.

I didn't think that meant it was literally glass? Is there any more detailed explanations of how this display was made? I went to best buy yesterday and while no one was looking I sneaked a poke at the screen . there was a bit of distortion which led me to believe it was just the panel and not glass.

Yes, it means it is literally made of glass. If you push on it, it can flex somewhat, but it's made of glass.
