Ive only had my 15" rMbP for 2 weeks now and I wasn't running any other programs except safari! And it got super hot, over heated and shut off. I tried restarting and it wouldn't even load. I had to wait an hour to let it cool off and turn it back on.

Is this normal every once in a while?

Its certainly not normal, my rMBP never shut down due to over-heating and I've put it through its paces at times.

I'd call apple or take it to an apple store.

It could be a plug-in.
Next time that happens turn on activity monitor and take note of what is draining CPU.

I sometimes notice flash forcing my CPU to 99%+ stressing it like that could make the thin rMBP shut down for its own hardware safety.

If you don't notice a program error, then I would suggest you give Apple Support a call and see what they say.

That really doesn't sound healthy. Even with 100% stress on CPU and GPU it should not overheat under normal environment temperature.

How fast were the fans working. Maybe it's a faulty thermal paste?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm going to call apple and set up genius appointment.
