rMBP Performance Issues, Which Model 2.3/2.6/2.7?

Hi Guys,

Strange one this and its just an observation I have made, nothing scientific going on LOL but just about every time I see someone reporting performance issues on the rMBP they are using a 2.6GHz version.

Just wondering if people can post if they are having performance issues and state what variation of device you are using.

It is probably nothing but I posted this in a thread and a couple of people actually agreed with me so hence the thread.

I will start and say that I am using the 2.7GHz rMBP and do not have any performance issues. I know its subjective and I can say it is not running at 60fps all the time but I get nothing that causes me alarm. I am usually very fussy about these things as well.

Well there are probably many more 2.6 GHz MBPRs out there than 2.7 GHz MBPRs as the 2.7 GHz models are BTO.

I'm surprised that Apple didn't give the MBPR 2 GB of VRAM, as most mid to high end Windows laptops seem to have that, but I guess that's Apple for you! NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory is arguably not powerful enough to drive the retina display for some applications.

Be interesting to see if they do a speed bump early in the new year along with a 17 inch model...

Running Diablo III on almost max settings is pretty good. And it's factory overclocked.
 
2.6 GHz here w/ 16 GB RAM. No performance issues at all. No scrolling lag, no stuttering, never had it. People freak out very easily around here. Buy the laptop and enjoy the killer display.

The extra VRAM won't do much for desktop work anyway.

Even 2880x1800 at 24 bit per pixel only uses about 15 megabyte of VRAM. If you scale to 1920x1200 it internally goes to 3840x2400 which is about 28 MB of VRAM.

So for anything but games/3D work the 1GB is more than plenty.
 
My unit is 2.3GHZ basic version, but with 16GB RAM. I have just upgraded the HD by purchasing an OEM 512GB SSD, no issues whatsoever here!
 
But for 3D work 2 GB VRAM would be much better.
For Adobe Create Suite 2 GB (particularly for GPU rendering) would also be much better.
The least Apple could do is to avoid hobbling computers that can't be upgraded...
It is the same with RAM, you can't upgrade it, so 16 GB should be standard, not an extra cost option.

I can assure you that the 2.3 config is easily the best selling model of the bunch. I'd go as far to say that 70% of rMBP's are the 2.3 spec. People tend to buy the cheapest version of luxury items, whether it be cars or computers.
