rMBP using HDMI for Theather 7.1

Has anyone used rMBP->HDMI->Receiver->7.1 Speaker

For my application I using Onkyo 818 and 7.1 Speaker setup.. What wondered if there is any reason this wont work... Also guessing you need go into setting and push audio out to the HDMI receiver.

I remember hand shake issue with MBA and Onkyo 806 years ago. Hoping the 818 has since resolved these issues.

Other option is used Apple TV 3rd gen (I need buy) and maybe update the router to n series so 1080P is possible w/o streaming issues. Using AirPlay. Otherwise I need to convert all the MKV and other formats to a Apple TV friendly format.
