So I was just thinking that say I have the current 15" rMBP in 4 years and 4k TV's have come down to a reasonable price would you be able to plug in the mac via hdmi and use os x on the 4K TV at the full resolution? Just had this thought in my head.

HDMI in its present form only has bandwidth for 1080P.

Unless these TV's come with thunderbolt ports.
 
Oh man, I stand corrected. Then wonder why there was so much confusion over dual link DVI cables to get more resolution.I have to read up...

Yeah can't answer that either lol - Perhaps it's simply that there are currently no devices that output as 4k
