We are in alaksa vacationing and have att phones and Verizon phones. The Verizon phones are now on the GCI network. What exactly does that mean for our data etc? We have unlimited plans for all phones.

Thanks!

Check your Verizon call plan to make sure you are not paying some exorbitant fee for connecting to GCI system in Alaska.
I don't know if Verizon considers that roaming, but you might want to find out for sure, so you don't get a post-vacation surprise on your next bill. This would be particularly important if you are not actually in Alaska, but taking an Alaska cruise.

Cruise ships offer wi-fi, but at an incredible price. I would stick to trying to get wi-fi when off the sip in a port.

Amen about the cruise ships and high fees. My wife has been on a cruise all week with her friends and I begged her to keep her phone on airplane mode only. It seems she has. We have t Mobile so most of the port of calls she has gotten out on are part of our normal roaming plan where she gets unlimited text, 2g data, and .20 cent a minute calling. I agree definitely check your plan. I have heard horror stories about roaming fees. Use wi fi when off the ship if at all possible.

We are not on a cruise ship. We did Alaska via cruise last summer. This is one of Verizon's partners onshore.

Soo,different phone carriers in different parts of USA,and roaming fees even if you're not going to foreign countries? Sometimes,I am very surprised by how things are done in North America. I can travel from north Finland to Malta or Gibraltar, withouth any concerns about roaming fees,as we here in Europe has the same phone bills as when at home as long as we stay in the European Union.

I looked it up on a Verizon forum and it looks like we are okay. They seem to contract for service here. As long as we aren't out of the US or on a non US tower...using a tower from in the US that is actually in another country then we should be fine. We are not near another country...just deep in Alaska.
