I had quite few previous Mac Books Pro (last one 2019). The main annoying factor always was - terribly loud roaring fans going on most of the time. I think that something like that could hardly be called "professional" ? (maybe professional hair dryer? :) I exchanged the last MBP 2019 for M1 Macbook Air that is a wonderful relief - no fans, absolutely silent. But, of course, it is a bit small.

I really wonder if the new MBPs will be finally more professional and civilised and rather silent when working. I already ordered one but rather M1Pro - since I suppose that more powerful processor (M1Max) will be hotter and fans coming more often and louder ?

The cooling system should be better than in the current 16" and when not using full power, power consumption shouldn't be lots higher than the M1. Also, with no dGPU and bad power control implementation in that area, graphics during normal use with external screens should be efficient. So yes, I would think fan noise should be under control.

I'll just be happy if the new 16" doesn't bake my thighs when surfing the web, like my current 16" does.

Still quite unbelievable that within the technology of 21st century there must be this kind of noisy roaring fans there at all !! (for the most advanced and most expensive "professional" laptop. Lucky us that we don't have to pour cold water on it every 15 minutes and to recite some mantras so that is cools down a bit. Why there are no processors that remain 100% cool and silent? We are not at old stone age any more ?

My first computers were entirely fanless, even heatsinkless. It's because they are now more powerful that we need fans. The unbelievable part is the power of the fanless M1 MBA.

After switching to PC for 2-3 years at home, I was exited to switch back to Mac when the 16 inch first launched. To my dismay, the fans forced me to return it. My memory of the 2015ish macbook pro 15 I had never spun up that much. I couldn’t believe the positive experience I had with that one. The 15 had replaced an old i7 920 Dell tower, better performance and all in such a compact laptop design that let me have one machine that I could dock and also take with me anywhere. The first 16, due to the temps and noise, just didn’t seem right.

With the 15, only 3D rendering would make the fans spin loud, understandable, but it seemed like with the 16, any design work caused loud fans, combined with frequent 99c temps. Plus, some how running an external display made things worse - I still see a thread for that issue active to this day.

Trying to make the 16 work, I eventually had to install an app that would let you toggle turbo boost on and off for the Intel CPU, if I remember right. While that helped control temps and noise, I realized with a $3500+ price point, if just didn’t feel right anymore.

I have some big hopes for this new 16, tons of power, but temps and noise under control until you need sustained loads, like rendering. The first M1 achieved some amazing results in the old MacBooks designs. So I got my fingers crossed that these new larger designs (volume) with better cooling will have a better experience.

I am not going to miss my 13" intel MBP that always feels like a heater. Admittedly useful during the winter.

I have an old 2015 13" that was always dead quiet... I used to think that the fans were disconnected.

My cousins' 2019 16" MBP, though... yeesh. If you look at it the wrong way the fans would kick up a storm.
