I think they should just bring back the old air races. How cool would it be to watch planes like the Mustang, Spitfire, Bf109, FW190, F4U Corsair, Thunderbolt, Lightning and others racing around a huge oval course?

They still do the races with Mustangs....they could just expand them. Cheaper than building new rocket planes too.

Even with gliding, I don't see how they're going to stretch a four-minute burn rocket into an hour of flight time.

Still, it sounds like an exciting concept.

They obviously climb vertically for four minutes and glide down in a spiral.
;)

Inspiration from pod racing seems to have fueled this idea.

I don't know if it will be a fad or actually get crowds, but if the venues are limited to only a few, I can't imagine it being that popular.

I wouldn't mind racing one, though :D

D
I think if they could mix this with the Xprize contest's that are coming they both could bolster each other and in the end we get closer to space travel.

Maybe, but this is a little unclear:

The rocket planes will have a liquid oxygen/kerosene fuel mix, calculated to have a burn time of four minutes, requiring pilots to shut down their engines repeatedly and glide, then restart to pass opponents at up to 300 mph

I still think the piston engine fighter Reno Air Race is cooler. Plus they have a new Jet class. Oh yeah. :)

That would be awesome, as would the , older planes...
Next thing they will be having Space Races, o wait thats been and done

Turns out this is part of the new Xprize ! Cool this would be a very cool event to go to and even more so now that we have a very very bloated NASA and its once a year Shuttle flight...... If we are going to space they or the Russians are going to have to show Nasa it can be done for a lot less then 100 billion a year.
