Rollout of macOS Big Sur

Am I the only one wanting to know the rollout time worldwide for Big Sur? I've search everywhere and can't find even old articles on how Apple rolls out the macOS. I recall previously there having an article for it on their site when it used to be staggered for different regions. The Apple site says 12/11 for UK, France (I presume all of Europe) and for the US. I assume it starts moving Cupertino time. Anyone recall or know how they've done it for big releases in the past?

That's what I wanted to know, how the updates are regularly done. I never pay much attention until it's a major rollout. Appreciate it!

This is going to be interesting. All of this has caught me a bit unawares, but I would imagine this version is rather important, in the big Cal-geo scheme of things, having to do with M1 and all.

I bought into the M1, so I’m curious. There must be all sorts of extra code, right? All sorts of things.

Yes, I am. I know I don't normally do that, but since I have two machines and the primary one needs a boost I am. From all the reading on the new macOS unless they release the last (R2 version I've heard about), it should be good-to-go. I may wait to see what others updating before it hits here say and then wait, I'll see.

Thanks, two others said the same thing, so with three that makes it almost a confirmation. I’ll going to chill. After realizing that I was so hyped out it that I forgot the date yesterday that makes it clear that I should chill 😆 and wait.

I wouldn't go crazy on hype. These days, macOS releases have tons of bugs and glitches on day one. To be fair Big Sur seems loads more stable than Catalina ever was. Though, I'd still be cautious and maybe wait until 11.0.1 or 11.0.2 is released.

You’re right. Best to be prudent. I think it was the 11.0.2 (r2) they were discussing that had failed load. Everyone was saying that the hope they’d use 11.0.1 for the 11.0 release.

Never install MacOS until it's a few patches old on my own (older) primary machines, the initial release versions for the past 3/4's of a decade are volatile until at least the .2 if not .3 updates.

By older you mean what year? I was planning to update it on my newer 2019 Fusion drive machine and leave it off my 2014 Macbook until later.

All the ones that can install it in my signature won't be getting it installed until .3. Won't be upgrading machines on workplaces MDM until they're on .2.

Obviously on a brand spanking new machine, it's tough, but ones i have control over - early adoption is not worth it.

If I understand you're talking machines for work. That makes total since. In my case, I figure since I have a back tool (two), I'm okay. I assume the worst think to happen would be install failure and I'd have take my system to be totally reinstalled my the Apple Care center, so that's why I thought I'd be an early adopter this time. The benefits of the new functionality would do wonders for a system that I find a tad slower at times then my 2014 MacBook Air. That's why I'm planning to update. But, I do admit the discussion here gives me food for thought. Appreciated!

Oh well, a big fail with the rollout! Can't even install it, so all is safe. . Never seen this type of rollout ever. Prayerfully no one will lose their job for this.

Right. So, maybe wait for 11.0.2 or 11.0.3 before diving in (while maybe testing 11.0.1 and/or 11.0.2 on either a VM or a spare Mac to determine whether it's ready for mass rollout).

Personally, I may dive right in. Big Sur was far more stable in public beta for me than Catalina was at any point in its lifetime.

The sad fact is that some macOS releases never 100% stabiiize while some do and while some are pretty stable from early on (I ran El Capitan from 10.11.0 to its final security patch and it was 100% rock solid all throughout; similarly, both Mojave and Mountain Lion were pretty solid for me from start to finish). Your mileage will certainly vary as will the stability of each release (the utterly terrible part of Tim Cook's insisted-upon annual release cycle for macOS). But I'd definitely make sure to play with and test each version on a spare Mac or VM as that will help influence when/if to move to a new macOS version.

Put it in a VMWare container earlier using Fusion Pro 12. Not entirely surprised, but it won't start. It's not going anywhere near any of my own machines until 11.0.3 because of that. Catalina was bad, this is another level.

It is sad to see a multi trillion dollar company fail so badly! The rollout was huge 2 days back but look at reality now! Apple products have been on the decline for some time now. My new MacBook Pro 2019 died in two days. The one that was exchanged died in 3 months. They had to change everything since all of it was burnt out! Now here is the new OS which is a Big Slur!!

Well, I happened to wake up at 4 a.m. (GMT +1) and figured I'd give it a try and yes, it installed in about 20 -30 min. One of the fastest installs from start to finish ever! And this morning when I woke up to a fresh new macOS that boosted my Geekbench I am a happy camper! I have one little recovered file in the trash that seems uniportant related to rapportd (a metadata file), so I'll keep it there and delete in a week if I see no need fo it.
