Root Android?!

Okay I know this is a Apple forum but I have a quick Android question. Can I root the T-Mobile G2 and but my AT&T sim in it? If not can I get it and use it like a prepaid cell phone? Sorry for posting this here but this is the only forum I'm part of and would love any help. Thank you for your time and help!
