iPhone 5 or earlier Rotation Lock stuck on, brings up Timer

I have a 5S with iOS 11.2.6. Yesterday it started displaying the Rotation Lock as always on. When I raise the control panel and tap on the Rotation Lock icon the phone goes to the Timer and the Rotation Lock never changes. I've rebooted the phone and that didn't help. I read the article that Apple has on the Rotation Lock and there was nothing there that helped.

I should never have updated iOS. The phone is now frustratingly slow and now I can't rotate the message window to make typing easier. Any suggestions on how to unlock the Rotation Lock?

Try a hard reset: hold both the home button & sleep/wake button until the phone turns off & Apple logo appears.

If that doesn’t resolve the issue, you can try a “reset all settings” under settings > general > reset.

Thank you! I tried “reset all settings” and that took care of the Lock issue. But best of all the phone is now snappy again.
