Rovio has sold millions and millions of copies of Angry Birds games -- Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Space -- but the company's next effort flips that franchise on its head.

The next game, Bad Piggies, changes the antagonists into heroes by stranding the pigs on a desert island and having the player help them build vehicles and contraptions to get them to their eggs. The birds don't appear in the game, and the pigs are much kinder and more lovable than those in Angry Birds. Rovio sees the game as the first in a brand new franchise.

Fast Company has an exclusive look at the new game:
I'm in Espoo to get an exclusive first look at Bad Piggies, which will cost $.99 on mobile and is slated to hit iOS, Android, PC, and Mac on September 27, with Windows phones and others to follow soon. (Pricing for the desktop versions is still being confirmed.) The game is set in the same universe as its counterpart, but it indeed feels like an effort by Rovio to parlay the pigs, which have a loyal following of their own, into a completely new brand for the company.
Bad Piggies will be out for iPhone, iPad and the Mac on September 27th.

Are Rovio good partners with Apple? As I have a slight feeling they may have been in talks, and this may be one of the first iPhone 5 ready 'widescreen' games (that's if the leaked form-factor we've seen so much is the iPhone 5).

you mean there done milking the Birds for all there worth (pizza included) and now going to start milking the piggies?

The companies I dint like are game loft and rovio. They are the biggest culprits in money-grabbing. The beauty of the appstore is that people like andreas illinger can do it themselves and overtake huge corporations, while still having amazing consideration for consumers.

I'm actually kind of hoping the gameplay revolves around designing forts/structures/etc to withstand the bird barrage. I've always thought that would be the more entertaining side of the conflict.

Then why do you think about them?
If you don't like a product then...
don't buy it...
don't talk about it...
don't think about it...

Stop thinking about white rabbits and you'll be a happier bird.

I've bought two Angry Birds games, and I'm sorry but I'm having a hard time feeling ripped off. Trying to work up some rage, but there's nothing there. Maybe it's because I paid about £25 for "Lemmings" back in the old days and realise that the beauty of the App Store is that good games are dirt cheap, regardless of what the 11yr old reviewers say.

Coincidentally, "Bad Piggies" is also the name of Spike Lee's next movie.

They're just milking the cash cow for all its worth.....

1. That should probably 'cash pig' and not 'cash cow', and

2. What do you expect? They're a gaming company- of COURSE they're going to try and make money, and they've got one of the most well-known and successful mobile gaming franchises to leverage. At least they're trying a different game style even if they're using the same characters...

I haven't played the last few level releases of Angry Birds because the game got kind of stale for me. But for the price I paid ($.99) the amount of content I got was astounding.

I'm sure Bad Piggies will change the formula just enough to suck me back in again.

sounds a bit like 'cover orange' or whatever that was.

Can't really complain over pretty fun games that are ONLY a doller. Not sure why people care tbh as even at that cheap price, they DON'T have to buy it

Agreed. Not only that, but I can't count the number of updates with new levels that have been released for $2 I spent on Angry Birds and Angry Birds: Seasons. As far as I'm concerned they have been the best value of all the apps I have.

Well said and I completely agree.

Angry birds is getting more annoying by the day.
The shirts, pillows, etc are getting to be a bit too much.
I get that it's a fun game, but it's almost like seeing someone wearing a farmville shirt.

If you want some 'ammo' in feeling ripped off, how about Rovio selling a game and then slowly adding advertisements into it. I would happily pay £5.99+ for Angry Birds if I could remove the adverts from the pause screen. Also, they shuffled the layout of the pause screen when they introduced the adverts so if you do a quick level restart you would end up hitting the advert and not the restart button.

I too remember paying a lot for lemmings back on the Amiga :-D but I don't remember the creators putting adverts on the pause screen trying to sell me some ******* Lemmings' branded merchandise.

Rovio have also made it acceptable to use the horrible "pay to play/upgrade" model (created within time management games like farmville) in regular action games. It's a terrible shame that now there are games that even when you have purchased them, you cannot complete without paying additional money.

It's understandable to pay for an upgrade, but to charge additional money for a Mighty Eagle is just wrong in every way shape and form. Firstly, it annihilates the competitive edge to the game - buy an eagle, blow **** up - done. Secondly, it encourages other developers to copy. Finally, it's putting the idea into the minds of children that if you have a problem just throw money at it. These kids will grow up with poor money management & lack of understanding of the value of money.

But hey, that's life! I imagine if a new version of Lemmings came out, you would have to pay to use umberella's or something silly like that!

I'll take an angry birds shirt over a YOLO shirt any day......

But yeah I see your point.
