Megadeveloper (and master merchandiser) Rovio has released the first gameplay video for its new Bad Piggies game that was first revealed earlier this month. The game, which takes place in the Angry Birds universe, has the player creating and controlling vehicles and aircraft for the now-lovable pigs as they travel through the world stealing more eggs.

Rovio made more than $100 million in revenue last year through game sales and, perhaps more importantly, extensive merchandising. The company hopes that Bad Piggies can expand the Angry Birds world and open up a new universe of games and merchandise -- much like how, as TechCrunch pointed out, Super Mario Brothers has turned into a massive string of successful racing and party games.

Bad Piggies will arrive on iPhone, iPad, and the Mac on September 27th.

bad piggies

agreed nice trailer but what a terrible name. Its smells of a no holds bard brainstorming session. Misunderstood oinkers?

Expect them to try nickel & dime you via in app purchases. Like they did with Angry Birds space.

Acquire and Rule

The Angry Birds series is the only games I play. So, I'm looking forward to this spin-off. And, because they continue to be successful, expect Google to buy them soon.

i'm almost embarrassed to admit it... but this actually looks pretty cool. i'm impressed they went a completely different direction and it isn't just flinging pigs from a slingshot!

It kind of reminds me of Bike or Die from the Palm OS days.

Anybody else miss those days? "The good old ones".

Looks surprisingly good.. I'm actually one of the 10 people on earth who didn't buy any of the angry bird games but this one actually looks cool.

I wonder if it is too complicated for little kids though. I've had 3-5 year olds take my phone to play Angry Birds because all you have to do is pull back the slingshot. Designing some sort of vehicle based on obstacles in the level seems overly complicated for them.

It does potentially look like a good game for teenagers or adults, but I'd think most of the merchandise sales is due to the little kids so this may not help them there.

These games are petty lame.

Angry birds was completely hype.

U pay $1 and u try a couple of times on the pooper then you're done.

This reminds me of the car building game in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts… What's different about this in particular?

Gotta love them crazy ass piggies. Looks like a great, fun hit of a game.

Was about to post this. I think what made Angry Birds so successful was the fact that basically all ages can play.

Game looks good, don't get me wrong, but a more limited market. Should still sell great though.

I expected this to be nothing more than a pig-themed rip-off of their own Angry Birds game. After watching the trailer, I think that I might have underestimated Rovio.

Also, compared to what's floating around the web these days, the trailer was done really well. The only thing I'm not sure about is the name of the game.

The game actually looks pretty fun; I was expecting something much more simple when they announced it.

Rovio: Please make this game universal! I want unity with my iStuff.

I'm definitely one of those 10. I really thought Angry Birds was lame. This looks more enjoyable, particularly because of the customization factor.

Looks really good.

Noticed the gameplay was all widescreen too. ;)

Really? How could you tell? Think you've been smokin' too much iPhone 5 press.
