The Royal Mint has revealed the newly designed coins us UKers be jangling in our pockets later this year, in what is being billed as the biggest change to the nation's money since decimalisation forty years ago.

Here they are, with Apple-style reflections... ;)

The coins depict the Royal Arms sliced up among the different denominations, so England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all represented. Nowt for Wales therefore unfortunately, which is a little ironic given that the designer – who entered a public competition to design the new cash – is from Bangor.

Any thoughts on the new look? Personally, I really like them – I think they're rather striking. Mind, we'll see how they look in a couple of years when they're all grubby and the coppers are turning green...

They look quite smart, but I need to see one in real life before I decide.

Change is always nice. Aha. /pun

I think this is a better picture to get what the designer was trying to accomplish:

It does look pretty cool when arranged, but the 5p coin on it's own looks a little to busy for it's size.

What about the 2 pound coins and the 5 pound coins?
The Two Pound coins are remaining as they are – the standard design is only ten years old as opposed to the forty years of he other coins.

The Five Pound coins are special commemorative ones, generally only released every couple of years to mark some occasion or other – each time they have a new design. As such, they're not part of this revamp.

Are you some kind of coin nerd?:p

I just want to use these instead so I don't have to change my money when I go on holiday.

Unless you go to the US, Australia, Japan, China, Argentina...

Well true. The irony is, that if we did you might well be able to, as the Euro's position as the worlds biggest currency might make it like the US dollar is now as the international currency.

I quite like the new design, the pound looks a little bland compared to the rest but on the whole nice job. I can't wait to get my grubby little mitts on them.

Yeah but everyone will use it as an excuse to put all the prices up like they did in Eire.

I'm so glad about this. First thing I did when I read the thread title was worry about the £2 coin. That is a really neat design. Still have one left over from when I went to the UK.

So will the current set of coins still be legal tender? I've got about £20 worth of coin in a box somewhere from my last holiday to the UK that I saved for my next holiday to the UK.
