RSS in Safari not updating unread counts

Since the last security patch my RSS feeds in Safari aren't always updating the unread item counts. I have safari set to update every 30min on rss feeds in the bookmark bar. It may show 0 or 3-4 new items, but when i open them there are many more new unread items.

I've done a permissions repair and removed all RSS items from the preference panel.

Any ideas?
