RSS opens in iTunes

I'm trying to get to understand RSS feeds. Whenever I click to subscribe to a website's RSS feed it creates a place for it in the iTunes Podcasts page, which for text feeds like The Guardian or the Financial Times is no good at all. I can paste the feed address into Mail 4.5 or into Shrook, but this is relatively laborious. How can I stop the feeds opening into iTunes?

You will have to associate the rss format with another program other than iTunes - for Non ML systems that could be Mail or Safari itself.
