Are there any current RTS games that work on Mavericks that are similar to Age of Empires 2? I know AoE 3 will play ok, but I'm not really a fan. Also I have seen the browser-based Forge of Empires which is kinda cool, but they're just trying to sell you upgrades.

Would also love to find something similar for iOS/iPad but I haven't found anything remotely similar.

Looking for something that will consume hours of time, a technology-upgrade tree, good blend of offense and defense. I love AoE2, just looking for something similar to play while on vacation.

Thanks for your help,

Happy New Year!

Starcraft 2

That leaves out a lot of stuff, like C&C and such... they're the really similar games to AoE.

You might enjoy Stronghold 3, but it's more on the building side.

You could try the Paradox Strategy games, although they're not the same thing, more number crunchy. Europa Universalis IV or Crusader Kings 2 are good examples.

You've also got Total War series, that may be a bit more up to your alley, however it's turn based (and then has RTS phases of battle only).

There's Settlers 7, although it's a lot more on the building side and making things work, kinda like Caesars and such, not really battley. Anno series, similar thing.

I'm out of ideas now.

If you're having trouble playing AOE2 in Mavericks. You can get AOE 2 HD to play through Steam in Wine. It takes a bit of work, but if you do some Googling and reading, you'll eventually get it.

But Warcraft3 does not run on current Macs....just with Bootcamp or Wine or other 3rd party tools.

EDIT
You might want to try "0A.D."(read: zero anno domini)

You are joking right?

Warcraft 3 runs on macs from 8 years ago, and you can bet it runs on the current ones :p

You don't need any 3rd party tools, just the basic game (I used to play Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne on my old 2006 macbook)

He's not joking, the installer was never released for intel macs and I believe mavericks killed LAN support. These days it's probably easier to use wine.

OP, supposedly Feral is porting Anno 1404, that's one to look out for.

You'd also probably really enjoy rise of nations, but it was never released for intel macs. If you haven't tried it yet, you might want to give the AoE III expansion Asian Dynasties a shot. Haven't tried it myself yet , but it was designed by Brian Reynolds who made Alpha centauri and rise of nations and it was supposed to improve the game a lot.

Thanks for your support. At least someone that knows what he's talking about. WC3 does not work on my 2011 MBA due to said problem.

I'll add a +1 to that... I didn't include WC3 in any of my lists due to all the problems I had last time I tried to install. It was many years ago, but I think I gave up, so I didn't bother talking about it.
