Think of all the work done over so many years, and then to hear that first "chirp" from the collsion of two black holes. Over a thousand people for over a century of effort. It's really humbling to think about when you find yourself grumbling over having to spend 20 minutes figuring out why some computing device isn't behaving itself.
I'm happy for the planet every time it comes to light anew that, despite all our concern over shortening attention spans and distractibility in this century, there are still people who carry on work that has already taken more than a human lifetime even when the work still falls short of some worthy goal or proof of hypothesis. We're not so bad at keepin' on keepin' on after all.
