It looks like I am going to purchase a mac mini for a friend and I will be wanting to set it up and then send it to her whereupon she can plug her monitor in.

However I only have a rMBP and I don't have any other monitor I can use so I was wondering if I can somehow use the screen on the rMBP connected to the mac mini just so that I can see what I'm doing on the mini in order to set it up.

Do you have a TV with HDMI input? The Mac Mini has HDMI-out.
